THE MARTIN CERAMICS FELLOWSHIP

The Martin Ceramics Fellowship provides a significant opportunity for a mid-career Australian ceramic artist to undertake an intensive six-week residency at JamFactory in Adelaide, South Australia in May/June 2027.

Valued at over $10,000, this residency includes travel expenses, accommodation, up to 8 hours per week with a qualified studio assistant, materials allowance and kiln firing allocation.

This Fellowship has been made possible by the generosity of Rick Martin and The Friends of South Australian Arts.

RESIDENCY DETAILS

The Martin Ceramics Fellowship enables the recipient to undertake a residency within the JamFactory Ceramics Studio. The six-week residency provides the opportunity to experiment and develop new work.

The residency includes:

  • return flights and transfers or expenses for travel by car

  • self-contained accommodation in the JamFactory studio apartment + parking

  • qualified studio assistant for up to 8 hours per week

  • materials allowance up to $1,000

  • kiln firing allowance up to $1,000

The recipient will be required to provide a public talk and contribute up to one hour per week of one on one mentoring discussions with Ceramics Studio Associates.

There is no requirement for an exhibition outcome from the residency, and any exhibiting opportunities at JamFactory that might arise from the residency would be considered and negotiated separately.

SELECTION PROCESS

Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of judges including:

  • Jordan Gower, Studio Head, JamFactory Ceramics Studio

  • Lee-Anne Hall, Curatorial Director, JamFactory

  • Russell Kelty, Associate Curator of Asian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia

The two key criteria for selection will be:

1) the artist's demonstrated record of achievement

2) a detailed project proposal on how they will utilise the allocated time within studio

 
 
 

HOW TO ENTER

The application must include;

- A statement (100 words max) about the nature of your work

- A proposal (300 words max) outlining what you hope to achieve, what new things you wish to experiment with (technically and/or conceptually) and how you would leverage the opportunity for further development of your career

- A PDF File of your Curriculum Vitae (2 pages max)

- A PDF File with up to 10 images of indicative work

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be permanent residents of Australia and must have a demonstrated professional ceramics practice of at least 8 years.

ABOUT JAMFACTORY

JamFactory is a unique not-for-profit organisation located in the Adelaide city centre and at Seppeltsfield in the Barossa, in the state of South Australia.

It is recognised nationally and internationally as a centre for excellence in glass, ceramics, furniture and metal design.

STUDIO FACILITIES

JamFactory’s Ceramics Studio is a substantial facility, set up with eight electric kilns and three gas kilns, spray glazing booth, pottery wheels, Venco slab roller and space for hand building, plaster mixing room, glaze lab, pug mills and hand extruder, blungers and drill mixers, ball mill, jigger jolley, a slip casting area and drying cabinet. The studio draws local and national ceramic artists to Adelaide to produce a vast array of ceramic objects from production through to high end exhibition pieces.

The Studio’s kiln room has three 480L electric Rhode kilns, a 60L Woodrow test kiln, three additional Woodrow 310-420L kilns and a 340L Tetlow kiln, which are all rated up to Orton cone 10 and primarily used to fire Clayworks LGH stoneware. JamFactory’s kiln room has inbuilt extraction, allowing the safe use of lustre glazes.

The Studio’s glaze lab has all fundamental oxides, carbonates and other raw materials, a dedicated snorkel extraction, industrial scales and sieves. The studio also holds a range of stains and underglazes.

The Ceramics Studio team includes a group of skilled and committed ceramic artists, who work alongside Associates to assist with ideas and skills development and provide technical guidance and support. Our team has a diverse range of skills and interests that span contemporary art, design and decorative arts, glaze development and production processes.

Not only used as an Associate development and production facility, the Ceramics Studio also offers kiln hire services for ceramic artists external to JamFactory. This hiring community extends from established artists with a specific firing need, to hobby makers just learning about clay, and teachers looking to facilitate school projects.
