Millicent-born and Adelaide-based artist Tim Edwards creates works with visual complexity that play with depth of field and dimensionality. A glass artist renowned for his linear vessel or vessel-like sculptures, Edwards came to the medium by way of ceramics. During his career spanning four decades, Edwards has refined a bold sense of design and surface manipulation.

Tim Edwards: Perception Deception is showing at the Phone Booths at the Adelaide Railway Station until 27 September 2022.

In Perception Deception Edwards creates a series of topographical wooden sculptures displayed as a sequence of mini installations. This body of work defines, describes, and distorts our perception of form in two and three-dimensional space.

His sculptures are an extension of his daily drawing practice. He is interested in the graphic qualities of film, animation and comics. This project is inspired by the optical illusion of one point perspective drawings of railroad tunnels. Edwards describes Perception Deception as being about “the transformation from one thing to another, through making and trial and error.”

Edwards is closely affiliated with JamFactory as an alumnus of its Associate training programs in both Ceramics and Glass. He is currently a senior technician and artist at its Glass Studio. Edwards also shares a home studio with partner and fellow glass artist Clare Belfrage.

Exhibiting nationally and internationally, Tim has artwork in major public collections including the National Gallery of Australia; National Gallery of Victoria, and the Art Gallery of South Australia. In 2006 he was awarded the Rakow Commission from the Corning Museum of Glass, USA. His work was included in the 2018 Adelaide Biennial Divided Worlds. Recently he was the recipient of the prestigious 2022 Tom Malone Prize awarded by the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
