With a passion for creating designs with narrative that explore unique craft techniques, technology and materials, Melvin Josy’s practice is an investigation in finding meaning in objects beyond their function and aesthetic. Aspiring to design work that questions the mundane and reflects upon our relationship with nature and culture, Josy’s recent projects explore ways of creating cross-cultural artefacts that juxtapose traditional making techniques with modern technologies.

Carman Skeehan is a glass artist and designer focusing on highly functional homewares. As an emerging artist, Carman’s practice focuses on the value of collaboration, experimentation and constant research. Her work is heavily process driven with sketching, tests and critique constant parts of the process. After translating sketches into clear glass forms, Carman works up to a final piece in her intended colours and techniques.

TOM SUMMERS

Using a combination of slabs, slump moulds and coiling elements, ceramicist Tom Summers’ otherworldly and highly architectural objects aim to produce a state of contemplation - imparting a sense of absolute stillness, calming the viewer and drawing them into the work to an unknowable point. Playing with perception, colour and scale, Summers’ creative practice is slow and meditative, allowing for creative flow and exploration in the use of coloured stains, testing and sampling.

Studying Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT, Courtney Hogan is a contemporary jeweller who’s works act as vessels for telling stories. Using different techniques, styles and materials, Hogan draws inspiration from narratives, emotions and synchronicities of daily life, using each piece of jewellery to ground these aspects with a sense of time and space.

Minimal and functional, Bolaji Teniola creates objects that strike at the heart of contemporary design. Focusing on the intersection between experimentation and materiality, Teniola’s practice aims to traverse various mediums, exploring materials and processes in search of pragmatic solutions that place equal importance on functionality and aesthetic appeal.

LAUREN MURPHY

Lauren Murphy creates sculptural, functional ceramics. As a recent graduate of Visual Communication Design at the University of South Australia, Lauren combines design processes with a range of ceramic techniques to craft her hand built vessels. Lauren’s work is influenced by the variation of forms, textures and colours in natural objects, as well as through exploration of shape, light and scale. Each work is crafted with functionality in mind, through a slow and meditative process of making.

Designing and producing functional, wheel-thrown tableware and hand-built decorative design objects, ceramicist Holly Phillipson’s practice is timeless and understated. Drawing upon historical work, Phillipson’s work references antique forms in the shapes, movement and surface decoration of each piece, focusing on the story and cultural significance behind each object.

Coming from a family of celebrated glass blowers, Calum Donaldson’s work plays between the intersection of colour, light and form. Creating bright, functional drinkware alongside more experimental vases and platters, Donaldson is drawn to the idea of expanding his technical abilities to progress his skills in the craft.
