Power Surge - Into the grid

Power Surge – Into the Grid features prototype lighting designs created by JamFactory Studio Associates working across glass, metal, timber and ceramics. The prototypes were developed as part of JamFactory’s annual product design challenge ‘Design a Thing’, led throughout 2026 by JamFactory’s Creative Directors.

As part of their training, Associates accepted the challenge to develop a functional light fixture or lamp which incorporated a metre long LED strip into a product design suitable for the marketplace.

Within the limits of time, skill, material cost and pliability, Associates have created a body of work which highlights the role of playfulness, experimentation and innovation in the process of product design and production. The works displayed delight in their functionality, their assertiveness, their whimsy and technical mastery. Each creation reveals the a unique design signature through each Associates carefully considered aesthetics and skilled material manufacture, as evident here with ceramics delicately pressed with linen to give texture and warmth, glowing faceted timber, blown glass forms, cold worked and made gestural with light, finely detailed brass paired with paper screen, and a running metal ribbon as scaled-up jewellery for the wall.

JamFactory’s Studio Associate training program has been operational for over 50 years and across that time has provided training and employment for over 400 artisans. The two-year program attracts outstanding emerging artists and designers from across Australia and around the world and is led by some of Australia’s most skilled artisans. With access to JamFactory’s exceptional workshop facilities, Associates work in a supportive environment alongside their peers, studio mentors and visiting resident artists in developing extensive material knowledge, and technical, conceptual and entrepreneurial skills.
