Brian has been with JamFactory since April 2010. Having worked in art and design organisations for more than 20 years he is passionate about promoting the social, cultural and economic value of creativity and design. During ten years as Associate Director at Object Gallery in Sydney, he curated several important exhibitions including the landmark survey of contemporary Australian design; Freestyle: new Australian design for living.
In 2007 Brian was one of ten curators invited by Phaidon Press, London to contribute to &Fork, a book profiling 100 emerging product designers from around the world and in 2008 he was an Adjunct Curator for the Museum of Arts and Design, New York. Brian is a graduate of the Tasmanian School of Art in Hobart and also has a significant background in commercial management within museums and galleries. He managed the merchandising and retail operations at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (1998-2000) and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (1995-98).
Brian loves living in Adelaide and cycles to work most days. He is most at peace when bush walking with his family.
Since completing his Master of Visual Arts at Sydney College of Arts, University of Sydney in 2003, Hall has exhibited extensively with his work featured in By Example, Australian Contemporary Jewellery at The Museum of Arts and Crafts in Itami, Japan, 2010. In 2003, Christian undertook a residency at Surrey Institute of Art and Design, UK as part of the HAT (Here and there) project. He has been a sessional lecturer at both the University of South Australia and Adelaide College of the Arts. In 2009 he became the Creative Director of the Metal Design studio at JamFactory.
Mirams completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Furniture) at the University of Tasmania in 1997, before becoming an Associate in the JamFactory Furniture Studio. In 2008, he launched Tom Mirams Design and received the Gold Merit and Schiavello Industry awards from the Design Institute of Australia. Mirams lectured at the Douglas Mawson Institute of TAFE during 2005–2006 and his practice includes exhibition and commission work. Selected large scale commissions include work for Microsoft, Forestry SA, Transport SA, Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival for the Arts. His work has featured in JamFactory’s leading exhibitions including Resource Re-Source and Credenza Credentials.
Venables has established herself as one of Australia’s leading contemporary ceramicists, initially completing a Diploma of Studio Pottery at the renowned Harrow College of Art in London before receiving her Master of Fine Art (Ceramics) at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1995. She has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas, including solo exhibitions at Galerie Besson, London and Nancy Margolis Gallery, New York as well as featuring in Korero and Hui Hua – Ceramics in Conversations as part of the 2010 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale at Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan. In addition to her practice, Venables has lectured at several Australian universities and international institutions including the Taiwan National College of the Arts, Konstfack School of Art and Design, Sweden and Royal College of Art, London.
Moore has established himself as one of Australia’s leading contemporary glass artists, initially completing a Bachelor of Arts (Glass) with Honours at the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University before becoming an associate in the JamFactory Glass Studio in 1995. His work has featured in Making It New: Focus on Contemporary Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney and in the Asialink touring exhibition White Hot: Contemporary Australian Glass. In 2009, Tom’s large scale installation solo exhibition Moore is More was exhibited at JamFactory and Ray Hughes Gallery, Surrey Hills. Moore has lectured at the Pilchuck Glass School, USA, University of South Australia, Sydney College of Art and Canberra School of Art. His work is held in the Museum of American Glass in New Jersey, National Gallery of Australia and Australian National Parliament House Collection in Canberra, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane and Art Gallery of South Australia.
Emily has a background in marketing, sponsorship and corporate sales and came to JamFactory from the Adelaide Film Festival and the Adelaide Festival of Ideas, where she brokered major sponsorship agreements across a range of industry sectors including retail, education, hospitality, construction and media.
Prior to this, Emily spent over five years as an advertising Sales Manager with News Limited, delivering press and online marketing solutions to government and the corporate market. Emily has a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Adelaide.
Since completing a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Glass) with first class Honours at the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia in 2002, Roberts was awarded a Helpmann Academy grant to travel to Germany to work with Therman Statom and B Jane Cowie. His electrical background has enabled Dale to technically assist many leading glass artists including Claire Belfrage, Hilary Crawford, Kimberley Haugh and Nick Mount. Dale has exhibited his work locally and received the Starvedog Lane Wine Label Design Award in 2003 and was a finalist in Ranomok Glass Prize, Canberra in 2007. He has been a sessional lecturer at the University of South Australia and has participated in several workshops with internationally acclaimed artists Dante Marioni, Lino Tagliapietra, and Katherine Gray.
Vicky joined JamFactory in May 2004. Vicky has 30 years experience having worked previously in a variety of industries including manufacturing, importing, retail, as well as the defence and community sectors. For over 20 years Vicky has been an active member of the craft and textile community through her work on committees, teaching workshops and participating in and organising exhibitions.
Claudine joined the JamFactory team in 2009 having previously worked in direct marketing, IT and performing arts. Claudine is currently studying a Bachelor of Communications.
Claudine is married with two small children and enjoys cooking and running in fun runs.
Having been a manager in the retail sector for many years Margaret returned to one of her greatest passions, the arts. On completion of her Bachelor in Visual Arts and Applied Design in 2003, Margaret went on to experience a number of arts organisations including the Adelaide Fringe, SALA Festival and Carclew’s Off The Couch. Since joining the JamFactory team in 2004, she has worked on the International Craft Initiative which presented shows at SOFA Chicago, Collect London and Talente Munich from 2005-08, whilst also assisting in the gallery and wholesale departments. During this time she completed a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Cultural Management. In 2007 she was appointed JamFactory’s Curator and Exhibitions Manager presenting a broad program of exhibitions, highlights of this program including the From the Earth in 2008, Resource – Re-Source in 2009, and Teawares in 2010. Margaret is currently studying a graduate diploma in Art History, and when time permits she enjoys travelling, catching up with friends and getting out and seeing as much live music as possible.
Sophie has a Bachelor of Visual Communication (Graphic Design) from the University of South Australia, graduating in 2003. She began her career in the arts as an Arts Administration Trainee in the Marketing Department of Carclew Youth Arts in 2004. During this time Sophie also freelanced as a graphic designer for arts organisations and individuals.
Sophie joined the JamFactory team in 2005 and enjoys riding her retro red bicycle and collecting contemporary jewellery.
Brad joined The JamFactory in 2011. Having previously studied Media Arts he has worked in video production and on-line telelvision. Brad is a digital and social media specialist, who enjoys travel, film, photography and music.
Emma studied a Bachelor of Industrial Design at the University of South Australia, graduating in 2007. From here Emma moved to the UK working for 2 years for the British manufacturer Thorsten van Elten, during this time she also interned for Marc Newson in Paris, after winning SOYA (Spirit of Youth Awards) in 2007. In 2008 Emma and husband Daniel set up their own design studio (DANIEL EMMA) and have exhibited in Australia as well as New York, London and Tokyo. Emma recently won the Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Award 2010 and will be traveling to Milan in April to exhibit a new collection of work. Emma loves baking, gardening and decorating her 100 year old pressed-tin cottage, as well as riding her bike around Port Adelaide and going to the beach with her sausage dog Frankie.
Roxanne joined JamFactory in 2009 having previously worked at Yalumba Wines in Angaston for 10 years as well as in the glass department of David Jones for 12 years. Roxanne enjoys squash, hiking, gardening and reading and has participated in the Trailblazer Challenge 34 and 50km walks for charity.
Kate has a Bachelor of Visual Art (Photography/New Media) from the South Australian School of Art. She is an active member of the arts community as an exhibitor, Seedling Art Space Committee Member and is currently undertaking a Helpmann Academy Mentorship with contemporary artist, Sera Waters. Kate first came to JamFactory as an Arts Administration Trainee working in the Marketing department and began working in the retail shop in 2010. Kate holds Postgraduate Professional Certificates in European Art and Indigenous Art from the University of Adelaide.
Kate has a passion for yoga and spends the majority of her free time developing her yoga practice, reading about yoga or cooking vegetarian meals. There is nothing Kate loves more than a perfect soy latte or cuddling up with her cats, Bella and Bojangles.
Stephanie graduated from Adelaide Centre for the Arts, Tafe SA as a ceramic major in 2006. In 2007 Stephanie undertook the JamFactory Associate Program in the Ceramics Studio, and now rents studio space at JamFactory, focusing her time on the development of both exhibition work and her own production range.
Peta worked as a graphic designer/illustrator after completing a Bachelor of Visual Communication with Honours at the University of South Australia. In 2007, she travelled to London and during her time overseas she worked as an Assistant jeweller to Scott Wilson and Jane Adam at Cockpit Arts. The work produced by Peta in collaboration with Scott Wilson has since been exhibited at the Design Museum, London as well as New York, Paris and London Fashion Weeks. Since returning home to Adelaide to study Visual Arts at Adelaide College of the Arts, Peta has held solo shows at Metalab in Sydney, A Room of Her Own, Soda and Rhyme and Urban Cow in Adelaide as well as exhibited in a number of group exhibitions. She was finalist in Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards for Industrial and Object Design in 2009 and selected for the Art of Nature: Stirring the Possum artist retreat at Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula. During 2010, Peta has been part of the Creative Education Partnership artist-in-residence program at Gilles Street Primary School. Peta completed the associate program in the Metal Design studio last year and now rents an independent studio with Leslie Matthews.
Janice completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts, Glass and Ceramics at the University of South Australia in 1999, followed by the Associate traineeship program in the glass studio in 2001.
Janice also completed Honors at the Australian National University in 2005.
Janice has participated in various exhibitions around Australia, the USA and Asia and undertook an Australia Council Mentorship with Giles Bettison in Brooklyn, New York in 2003
She currently runs her own studio in Adelaide making work for exhibition.
Bettina has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of SA, and carried out the two year Associate Program in the Glass Studio in 1987. Bettina went on to assist Gary Nash in New Zealand for 2 years, followed by the establishment of her own glassblowing business in Sydney working with Rob Wynne, Ben Edols, Kathy Elliot, Matthew Curtis, Tom Moore and Richard Whitley. Bettina was a part time lecturer at Uni SA as well as the JamFactory Glass Studio’s Production Manager. Bettina has worked in the retail shop since 2007 and enjoys skiing, walking, living in the hills with her fruit orchard and gardening.
Angela joined JamFactory in 2011 having previously worked in hospitality. She is currently studying Bachelor of Tourism and Event Management at the University of South Australia. Angela has 3 children and enjoys catching up with friends over a good meal or seeing a movie, she also enjoys supporting and seeing local bands.
Lucy joined the JamFactory retail team in 2011 having previously worked in retail sales, management and admin. She completed a Bachelor of Economics in 2005 and has since gone back to University to study a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Specialising in Printmaking.
She enjoys baking, singing, and experimenting with various other arts and crafts such as ceramics and textiles.
