Basket Weaving

Tjanpi Desert Weavers -

In conjunction with award winning exhibition KURU ALALA: Eyes Open, JamFactory presents a workshop held by the Tjanpi Desert Weavers - a not-for-profit Indigenous social enterprise of Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council. Tjanpi Desert Weavers are seasoned teachers and their workshops are in high demand locally and interstate. Tjanpi workshops are deeply enjoyable for participants who relish the chance to spend time with desert weavers swapping stories and learning basket making skills in an environment of cultural exchange. All material supplied, no experience required.

This Session will include lunch and is followed by a free public series of talks including Dr. Jennifer L. BiddleDirector, Visual Anthropology, ARC Future Fellow National Institute of Experimental Arts (NIEA)

COFA, UNSW; curators Virginia Rigney and Jo Foster; the Tjanpi Desert Weavers and collaboration artists Maria Fernanda Cordoso and Alison Coulston.

Clay at the Edge: Teachers Workshop

JamFactory is presenting a day of workshops that draw inspiration from an exciting new exhibition HYPERCLAY: Contemporaray Ceramics to be held as part of the 2012 Australian Ceramics Triennale - Subversive Clay. The day will focus on how contemporary artists are using clay in unconventional and fascinating ways. The day will include two workshops lead by renowned artists Stephen Bird and Jacqueline Clayton, both featured in the exhibition, followed by a presentation of digital mediation in ceramic practice by Roderick Bamford.

Aims

> To introduce teachers to new and innovative approaches in ceramics

> To provide teachers with fresh ways of teaching ceramics in the classroom

> To present to teachers ceramic practice in the context of contemporary art practice

What does the day involve?

10 - 11am

Tour of the HyperClay: Contemporary Ceramics exhibition with the curator Danielle Robson, followed by a tour of JamFactory’s studios, galleries and shops

11-12.30pm

Workshop with Stephen Bird using clay, mobile phones and computers

12.30 – 1.15pm

Lunch supplied

1.15 – 2.45pm

Workshop with Jacqueline Clayton exploring non traditional clay bodies and their applications

Presentation by Roderick Bamford - digital mediation in ceramic practice including a demonstration of the 3D ceramic printer

Metal Design Studio

Intermediate Jewellery Making Workshop

Take your jewellery making to the next level with this seven week intermediate course. This course is designed for students who have completed the beginner’s course or have some prior knowledge of jewellery making. Some of the advanced techniques that will be demonstrated include how to use the Hydraulic Press to produce hollow forms, how to produce folded metal forms and advanced jewellery findings. Students may choose to create one major piece or a series of smaller works throughout the course. All necessary materials are supplied; some student may chose to purchase silver in addition to these.

Introduction to Silver Jewellery Making: Working 925

During this seven-week course participants will learn basic silver jewellery making skills such as sawing and filing, soldering and riveting, forming, roller embossing and other surface texturing techniques. Projects will include the design and production of a pendant piece and a silver ring. Students will then be guided through their own self-set project where they will design and make a piece of their own choice.

Hydraulic Die Forming: Impress me!

Use the Hydraulic Press to produce three-dimensional forms from metal and make them into jewellery and small objects! No prior knowledge is required but also suitable fo those who have completed our Introduction to Silver Jewellery Making Workshop.

Glass Studio

Individual and Team Glass Blowing

Individual Workshop: Experience an intensive one-on-one session in the glass studio...practice glass blowing techniques taught by experienced practitioners in a professional environment. Participants then design and make their own glass piece whilst developing skills in gathering, forming and design.

Session Times : Saturday or Sunday

8am - 12pm or 12.30pm - 4.30pm

Group Workshop: Live glass blowing demonstrations and tuition, where everybody will be dipping into the furnace with a chance to make their very own paperweight or drinking glass. This program is perfect for social, corporate and school groups.

Ceramic Studio

Sandy Lockwood Workshop

JamFactory presents internationally renowned ceramic artist Sandy Lockwood.

This workshop is a must for anyone interested in exploring throwing and the soft material qualities of clay.

Sandy Lockwood has been a potter for over thirty years and has an established National and International reputation for her beautiful work as well as her teaching. She works from Balmoral Pottery Studio in the NSW Southern Highlands. This workshop is an exciting and unique opportunity to welcome her to Jam Factory Ceramics Studio. During the workshop, Sandy will introduce you to throwing..... a soft approach to making. You will work at exploring new ideas, directly developed through altering pots at the wheel. A playful approach.....throwing and experimenting, laughing and a cup of tea! Morning and afternoon tea provided . Please provide your own lunch or there are cafes nearby.

Saturday Afternoon Children's Pottery

Over seven weeks kids will learn a variety of hand forming methods such as rolling, pinching and slabbing in order to make a series of projects. They will learn about clay whilst having fun, experimenting and playing. They will then decorate and glaze their pieces ready to take home.
